It is now reported on the BBC that the dentist who shot Cecil would not have done it had he known the lion had a name:sad:.

I listened to radio 4 programme about big game hunting in African wildlife parks. Basically it is the only way they can afford to keep running. They get no government funding. Many of the animals would be culled anyway, either because there are no predators on that particular wildlife reserve, or because the ratio of male to female animals is out of balance. If the wildlife reserves could not get funding by hunters paying huge amounts of money to shoot their animals, they would have to close and be turned into over-grazed cattle land. Population pressure is high in Africa too. Cecil made the ultimate sacrifice. He died so his fellow wild animals could live.

He died so his fellow wild animals could live.
This is irrelevant to cecil.
  1. Lions don't need to be culled. They aren't endangered, but they are not overpopulated.
  2. The people who received the money were not the people who were "caring" for Cecil. He was lured off the nature reserve he lived on to be shot by people who had contributed nothing to his welfare.
National parks in South Africa sell a lot of game meat and other products, but it's all from smaller ruminants. eg various antelopes, and notably in the skins zebra. No elephants, nor lions or any other predators.

Cecil lived in Zimbabwe. He was named after Cecil Rhodes. Maybe they are not overpopulated because they are culled.

I haven't looked up all the details of the Cecil's demise. It does sound rather irregular. However, the Radio 4 programme pointed out that the money wildlife parks received from letting big game hunters shoot their animals was very important in keeping them going.
