Explain what?

As I said, I do like him. As a person and rider, he's respected by me. Even like him commentating on the TV.

The fact that if he was riding a bike which was not his own branded one it would be ridiculous, as would it if he was wearing a different brand of clothing, pedal, shoe, drinking red bull over 'boardman juice' or sitting on a fizik saddle rather than whatever else he puts his name on?

Irrespective of his, yours, your dog, cat and pet tortoise's beliefs; helmets are advised as safety aids when riding within the UK (like it or not!). If he's going to write CBOARDMAN on one, and expect people to wear it, he should damn well wear one whenever he appears riding a pushbike on TV.

No such thing as bad publicity is there?

Thus, in this instance. Prat.

Why must he only ride Boardman bikes.... It would be disappointing if you couldn't try other bikes just because you had your own line of bikes. If I was him I'd have a whole stable of bikes at least I'd have an excues to own loads.

As for the helmet, he's not said he'd never wear one, he's said people focusing on it are missing the point. If you want to wear one then he can provide one, not that they are absolute necessary.

" Helmets are advised as safety aids". The evidence for their real safety advantage is limited and he argues that thebest way of avoiding head injuries is to adopt policies which will reduce the accident rate. A study a few years ago by Dr. Mayer Hilman who investigated fatalities caused by head injuries revealed that about 92% of those who died from them would have died anyway from other fatal injuries.

He also puts forward the sensible view that cycling should be regarded as a perfectly normal activity which doesn't require the wearing os specialist clothing or kit, a la Netherlands

Neither have I have heard that he "expects" people to wear Boardman brand helmets

When he rides part of a stage race, talking his way through it with a Segway alongside, he wears a helmet and all the gear. When he appears in a commuting-orientated, cycling-for-all spot on TV he wear civvies and no helmet. I see difference but no inconsistency.

Indeed. If you're going to put your name on something and expect people to buy it, then farking well wear it.

I do like him, but he is a prat.

He's making a serious point for cycling safety, not flogging his brand.

He should be applauded for making no attempt to crowbar in a snidey plug for his own business benefit, which would be wholly inappropriate product placement, yet you call him a prat. Wuh???

At the risk of this degenerating into yet another tedious helmet thread (they have rheir own subsection on here for this sort of inflammatory statement BTW - saves otherwise decent threads going bad)

Advised as safety aids on nothing more substantial than the belief of someone else famous, some not famous people, their dogs, cats and pet tortoises.

Along with the marketing arm of the helmet manufacturers, shops with profits to make and many a different vehicle type road user who can feel less encumbered by little things like speed limits or safe passing distances if they can fantasise that half an inch of polystyrene is an effective remedy to motoring v cycling ills.

Two pages into the thread and already it's been derailed into a discussion of helmets. Well Done Cycling Safety Discussers!

I think the helmet issue is a massive red herring. It’s not even in the top 10 of things you need to do to keep cycling safe or more widely, save the most lives.
