The article said something about the driver being so remorseful that he hadn't cashed the insurance cheque. Surely, if he were driving without a valid licence, his insurance would be void and the company would not be issuing a cheque.

I really feel for Andrew Barnett's widow and children. They must still be going through hell. A suspended sentence and an £80 victim surcharge is not much of a punishment. Neither is a 5 year ban for an 83 year old.

Are you sure on that? I seem to remember something going on along those lines a while back. I would hope that Drago with his profession might know for sure.
given I have worked as a criminal defence lawyer and prosecutor for several decades, I have a pretty good idea of the law - so yes I am sure on that.

The average policeman's knowledge of the law is limited. Their role is not to be a font of law, but to keep the peace
