I've read this in a few places, however I've always read it as 'your finger tips should be able to just reach the stem' - not the actual bars.

I can just reach the stem on my bike, but I'm a long way from the actual bar.

Being able to touch the stem won't give you the correct reach though. It's the distance to the bars that's important not the stem. I think the common way of measuring with this method is with your elbow up against the front of the saddle and your arm outstretched you then add the width of four fingers to the tip of the fingers on the ourstretched arm which should then line up with the centre of the bars. Might be a good starting point but like the heel on the pedal method for judging saddle height it's only a guide. People are all sorts of different proportions and I'm not sure if whoever devised this method was taking into account people with fat of skinny fingers. Maybe there's a European Finger Width standard I'm unaware of (which will of course be different from the Colnago Finger Width standard ).

Very nice bike by the way Plax.
