If your former employer is no longer in business, then there is nothing a new employer or you can do legally or otherwise. Maybe they will accept a reference from your employer before that.

My three previous employers have all ceased trading. One only a week after I left, the others years later. I will have been with the current firm eight years in September and I would like to stay as long as they will have me.
