A spot of web based research suggests it's organised by WiSH, which is a charity with the sole purpose of supporting West Suffolk Hospital, so your remark about the organisers keeping the loot and the charity not seeing any is a bit wide of the mark.

That is good then, as you know a lot do not work that way.

Just found, are you sure it is a sportive?

Yeah that's the one, I've no doubt it was for a good cause and organised "in house", I also understand they need to know numbers. We had a "cycle swarm" sportive cancelled from the same venue last year through lack of numbers and that was far cheaper. Maybe because it was all for the local hospital more people were interested. I just wasn't willing to pay £35, I ended up doing 100 on my own terms which was good enough. I paid £40 last week for the family to ride Snetterton for EACH, you have to draw the line somewhere.

It is titled "family cycle and sportive "
To be fair to them they did have £20 early bird offer, I just thought £35 on the day was a bit much. The family cycle ride round the park was free I believe.

so I was going to do a local sportive this morning, 25 50 100 miles the usual sort of thing, £25 in advance which I was prepared to pay (it's a charity sportive for the local hospital). However just found out it's £35 on the day and I hadn't booked as I wasn't sure I was going to make it. Call me a tight wad but that to me is a fair old jump from £25 and rather expensive to ride the queens highway with everybody else. I'm not averse to contributing the odd bit to charity, for example the East Anglian childrens Hospice ride we as a family did around Snetterton race track last week.
Anyway that for me is too much so I'm going to ride my own solo route somewhere else, I'm not the sort to go anyway and just join the ride down the road although I guess there would be nothing stopping me from doing that? Thoughts?

Well, During the War, when I was in the Navy, we blew up our own ship, we dropped a depth charge in three feet of water.

Seriously though Del, couldn't Chinese Alan lend you the money!!!!!

Myself and a few other club members did the East Chesire Tour of Britain Sportive last Sunday. The organisers, Congleton CC, stated a minimum of 60% or the entry fee (£25) would go to two local charities.

Even those who signed up on the day payed £25 as there was no 'penalty charge!.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable ride with excellent marshalling and food stops.

Think the Fred Whitton is £45 odd. Pretty expensive for what you get. However it's always oversubscribed.
Yep, but it's set up pretty much exclusively to raise money for charity - over £1m cumulatively raised the last time I looked.

Got a good un this week though, someone in our club has contacts with one of the sponsors of the tour of Britain and has "arranged" for a few of us to head down to the smoke on Sunday and ride around the final stage course for an hour before the race, then hob nob it in a VIP after race party. :becool: For free.........

Yep, I done my bit and raised about £700 for this year's event. Enjoyed it so I'll probably go back again next year even though it's probably a 400 mile round trip.
Nice one. Agreed it's a top ride, and I should have added - I don't mind the cost when an event is so up front about it being for charity, as opposed to those that are just out and out obvious profit makers.

Seeing where you're located and knowing the hills around there I assume you found the Fred easy!
