His death was premature even in the 18th century especially as he didn't have a particularly hard life physically.

Got to be a bit careful interpreting these average life expectancy figures. If they refer to life expectancy at birth they will be heavily skewed by the awful rate of infant mortality. For those surviving to adulthood the life expectancy would be much higher. People did frequently reach what we'd consider old age, even then.
