Following a series of links from the reference to that Ibbotson chap above, I learn that Bannister's four-minute-mile was regarded as, separately, an English Native record and a British National Record (as well as, obviously, a world record). That seems to imply, at least in that era, a less whole-hearted endorsement of the idea that what counts is your nationality, if they created separate records for native-born citizens. Does anyone know if such records still exist?
