Homemade Maps for Handouts

Whats the most painless but legal method of marking up a map in order to print and dish out decent (legible) handouts for a public cycle ride ? Are there any copyright issues ?

I suspect that using a site such as "Bikely whose "raison d'etre" is route sharing may be the answer

the lowest tech way of doing this is to print off a Google map and trace over, then photocopy. This allows you to make the thing schematic - showing the bits that are relevant to the route, and adding notes - which can be in your neatest handwriting rather than stuck on with a graphics programme.
