Hello, thought I would update you all. I got some slicks for my mountain bike as suggested and the ride is much easier! Shaved a few minutes of my best time. Really enjoying cycling to work, helps that it is lovely weather though!
Thanks again for all your advice.

Ditto Holly, finally changed my tyres for Schwalbe CityJet slicks, dropped the handlebars a little and went out for a ride this morning. Even in 15mph winds which I previously wouldn't have moved in; I zipped along. Thank you all so much! Here's hoping I get to some remotely decent distances soon!

Old mountain bikes with slicks are perfect commuters - they laugh at potholes, chuckle at riding off kerbs (when shared use paths have daft ends) and relish a short cut through the woods

I guess that depends on your commute, for a hilly 46 mile round trip all on road a mountain bike is not ideal, but yes for shorter commutes no problem.

7 miles, each way, according OP. I rode 13 on a Hardrock over the weekend (because it's all I have with racks at the moment, and a grocery trip coincided with riding time)and it was no bother, empty or loaded.
