I was brought up as lunch being lunch, informal evening meals were tea. It only became dinner when one had to dress for it.

I agree with you, but as a child growing up in Stockport, the mid-day meal was Dinner and the evening meal was Tea.

For us too, childhood in Lincs an Notts.
Even my parents, one from Somerset and tother from Nirthumberland followed the dinner, tea route, no mention of lunch at all.
