Actually I'm thinking when it's dirty it would look best. Think 'brass' more than 'gold'.

All down to personal taste ,I think a gold chain and green trim on the tyres would look good. Its going to be a great bike.

Well, there's a story.
We were on holiday in Devon - in Rattery - and we went to a local town the name of which I don't remember. I say 'town', but this is Devon and what I really mean is a cluster of pretty houses around about 5 shops!
I was looking for a bike shop just to browse when it became obvious that the town was too small.
Then I spotted a little alleyway, down which there was a MASSIVE collection of bikes.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that there was at least 100 bikes crushed into an area that could barely contain them along with a little shed.

Turned out the guy that ran the place had been in the bike trade for most of his life and specialised in hub gears. But it looked to me like he was more of a hoarder than anything. I asked him if he had any Moultons and he said that he had several, but that they were in storage. I asked if it was possible to see one and he told me that I probably wouldn't want it and it was too much hassle! He said a few people had asked for them.

I asked him about large tourer frames and he grudgingly told me he had one 'round the back'. Which turned out to be another double garage (again I'm not exaggerating here) that was stacked to the roof with frames. It took us 20 minutes to dig the Galaxy out and he charged me 20 quid for it.

The place was an absolute goldmine. This was about 2 years ago and he said he was thinking of closing. I've no idea if he did, and I'm certain he has no web presence. I keep thinking I should go back but it's in the middle of no-where.

Edit: Found it - I can see the yard and garage on Station Road in South Brent on Google Earth! Sadly the resolution's low so I can't see if it's still full of bikes.
I'd love to know if he's still there - can't find any reference to him on the web.

you legend, thats about 55 miles from me and worth a recce if I can get a phone number from google

It's looking good!

I'm firmly in the "gold chains are good" camp - they add a bit of bling without being too obvious.

Just out of interest, how wide did you have the rear triangle set for the SA hub?

Excellent! I'd be really interested to know if he's still there.
I've been kicking myself that I didn't buy a pair of wheels with a 3-speed hub from him when I was there.
It's WAY too far for me to go back and have a look - I live in Berkshire.

1. Handlebars - Full brown leather bar tape coverage, just on the drops, or just brown handgrips on the drops?

Full!
Brooks do some really nice leather bits for bikes in addition to the saddles. Expensive, but if the saddles are anything to go by it's going to be luxuriously good.

Almost there now! Just waiting for the crankset to finally get delivered. And if it isn't by the end of the week I'll be ordering a non-SA crankset somewhere else as the distributor appears to be taking the piss a bit now.

Those with sharp eyes may notice a downtube shifter. Not sure how I feel about that, but not sure how I feel about the semi-track bars the frame came with anyway, and may be switching to bullhorns with a bar end shifter, but I'll give these a chance first.

Seeing it with the (cheap and nasty placeholder) black saddle on it has made me think that black saddle and bar tape might actually be quite pleasant, rather than the brown I was originally planning on. Some have suggested dark green but I think that would be a little too much. Thoughts?

Just realised I didn't address a couple of points made earlier:

3 spd alloy coaster - classy! You gonna line the lugs in gold!

Mérci! Considering lining the lugs in gold but it's a tricky job (certainly won't try it myself) and might look a little too gaudy. A bronze might be more appropriate.

Just been told it's finally finished! Crankset finally arrived ... except it's the wrong one. But it looks ok anyway so I've gone for it!

Actually kind of nervous I'm going to hate it - but that's probably more down to me having had quite a bad day today.

Couple of changes I plan to make - handlebars are too narrow, so I'll either change them for larger drops or bullhorns. Also, I may 'double down' on the gearing - got the ratios spot on now, but that leaves me with a rather large 42 tooth crankset and large cog at the back - long term I may swap the 42 for a 38 and whatever rear cog keeps the ratio the same.

I also need to push my rear wheel back a touch! Chain has gone a little slack already ;)

Hope it rides like you wanted.

Looks good, just a shame finish on the powder coating isn't better.
