I've only ever seen that, on some (very) heavy-haulage trucks

A neighbour went to work there. Apparently you have to be employed by them for 6 months before you're allowed to drive one.

Any journey over 50 miles would be planned as a major expedition and would require a full picnic basket and a thermos flask of soup .

I had an A50 in the 70s. Not much good for anything over about 50mph. But when I encountered a Cortina with a trailer, broken down and blocking my route home, the old bus made light work of towing the ensemble to a lay-by.
