Yes definitely avoid rural A roads, and B roads too...cos they turn into rat runs. Did a LEJOG this summer and by and large stuck to the lanes. It is possible. Had a couple of horrible experiences - 8 miles on a single carriageway B road directly into Lincoln from the south turned out to be a cut through and people were passing us at 60+ mph. Straight B roads north of Lincoln were also completely miserable - straight roads with good visibility, basically, so people floor it.
