When riding with toe clips I tend to avoid shoes with laces. I had a near nasty experience once when my laces got caught in the straps when I stopped. For a second I couldn't release my foot. As I fell sideways towards a big bush of nettles I just managed to yank my foot free. I wear velcro fastening shoes or velcro fastening sandals (closed toe trainer type) in the summer.

If you want to use walking trainers or similar, buy some deep toeclips.

You can't beat proper cycling shoes if going any distance, your feet will feel better for it.
