The Buckie stops here!

Don't worry. Give them five minutes and the 'Independents' will be rushing down to Westminster complaining that shopkeeper's revenue has fallen therefore "the government" must do something about it...I wonder how much a beer is in the Scottish Parliament's Bar(s)? -oh yes, it doesn't matter they are 'responsible' sorts.

In Tescos down our way, they are giving a helmetcam free with every two bottles of Buckie purchased.

How are they going to stop the Jocks from crossing the border and buying cheap hooch in England? Has this policy been thought through at all?

It depends on what the policy is intended to achieve. If it is to prevent Scottish people having access to any kind of cut price alcohol then clearly it won't work because people can get it elsewhere. But if it is intended to reduce consumption by making it that bit harder to get hold of, given that most booze isn't bulk bought in advance, especially by under age drinkers, then it does have a chance of making some difference. It will certainly affect impulse buying- drunken Glaswegians on a night out can't exactly pop across the border. Furthermore, the vile types of drink favoured North of the border aren't so widely available elsewhere...

A good point. Not even the most primitive denizen of Blaenau Festiniog would use Buckie for anything other than cleaning floors.

What pisses me of is that yet again normal law-abiding people are having to foot the bill because the government are too incompetent to stop children from drinking.

All you have to do is go over the border and get a load in;). Well that is until we do the same:sad:

It's not just children drinking, adults drink too much as well. A general approach to reducing alcohol consumption is a good thing.

One of the most effective ways a government can reduce alcohol consumption on a population level is to increase price through taxation. The real price of alcohol has fallen considerable over the last decade or so. This is an attempt to stop supermarket discounting of alcohol by establishing a minimum cost for a unit of alcohol. It will affect the bottom end of the market (in particular those aimed at the teenage population).
