Just spent a little time looking at the Trek 1.9(don't know why cos i can't have a new bike)

But the sites say no Trek bikes will be sent out by mail order.

Shop sales only.
What is the reasoning behind that then?

Some bike manufacturers don't allow their bikes to be sold mail order as they are concerned that the bike will not be assembled correctly. It also helps preserve the appearance of quality as it discourages discount outfits from selling their bikes.

Trek don't send bikes via mail order because after they sent one to George Hincappie for the Paris Roubaix a few years ago, the steerer column broke just below the stem.
This dumped poor George out of the leading break with handlebar in hands and the bike following the break!!!
Perhaps they blamed the damage on US Postal delivery service?

Trek (and Ridgeback) support their dealers. You get a bike that has been put together by somebody who knows what's what, and, if there's a problem, you can take it back.

Consider the alternative. Dahon (distributed by Fischer) have fessed up to a problem with some of their 2008 bikes that is potentially dangerous. Now are the mail order companies going to get in touch with their customers, and arrange for the bikes to be picked up, fixed, and sent out again?
