The last great Metallica album

The last Metallica album. The band has the same name, but it ain't Metallica any more.
But... but what about the black album?

As usual there seem to be some cracking suggestions on this thread that are absolutely deserving of investigation; however for now all I can manage is attention-deficit validation craving; so ince more into the void I spew my current aural proclivities...

It does nothing for me, never has done. Too polished, too clean, too...pop.

Controvertial indeed! While I'd level the same criticsm at everything that came after, I still rate this album enormously. Certainly not as raw as previous but potentially just as aurally powerful. It's different and I can see the argument for it being a step closer to commercialism, but arguably not inferior for it (musically, if not idealogically at least)..

Each to their own. The album got the band millions of more fans and introduced millions more to Metal music and thats not a bad thing.
But as I said, compared to their first four albums, it does nothing for me and the albums since have been patchy at best.

I'm not sure it really introduced many people to metal, at the time it was touted as leaving metal behind, and Lars in particular seemed very happy with that characterisation.

To be fair it was the first Metallica album I heard (thanks to a mate's older brother). If not metal (or thrash) what label did they thing would be most appropriate?

One of my random purchases based purely on liking the cover, and it costing £1 from my local indie store clearing out some space.

Not my usual thing, but good fun. Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Blur sort of vibes, but with their own sound. Singer clearly has a thing for Joe Strummer too. My good lady was quite surprised...

"What are you listening to?"

"This? Some random thing I picked up from Beatdown. It's not bad."

"... I know, I actually like it. Are you unwell?"

I know Morrissey's perhaps fallen out of favour in recent times, however his music and outlook always strike a chord that runs straight to the core of my black, dessicated soul..
