I tend to give them to recycle places or this weekend will be handing one over to a fellow cc''er for a charity donation. As with cars I tend to either get old knackered stuff that I rode until it just dies and owes nobody nothing or have new and keep it for a long time.

I may have a decent relatively new one coming up on here soon as I've got a beloved older one pretty well back into proper riding fettle.

I am trying not to hoard bikes anymore and thinning down to what I actually need and will give decent enough use to. - it will still likely be 4 though & I can justify them all. (in my mind anyway  )

1-Mountain Bike, a Trek Marlin 29'er (2011)
1-Expedition Tourer 26", a Schwinn Impact (1992) also main commuting bicycle.
1-Racing Bike, a Raleigh Technium (1986)
1-Randonneur-a G.LaPierre Type Tour de France (1970s) Currently under renovation.
There's also an Olmo from the 1980's that I need to have a new droput put on, as the droput was broken when I got it. It's mainly there because its' beautiful, or will be, with its' Campagnolo goodness throughout. I neeeeeed all of them. They are better and cheaper than sports cars. I have always sold the old bikes to help pay for the newish bikes.

Here for rides.
If bike x displaces bike y in the roster because the form and function of x is too similar for y to see regular use it gets disposed of:

conversation with friends and acquaintance
listing on the local bike club forum
selling on here
selling on ebay
stripped of parts and sold piecemeal
used a donor for building x

just occasionally reading a "bike wanted for such-and-such a mission" post in here, or elsewhere, will make me realise I have one in the shed that doesn't really earn it's keep and two or three times someone in here has got a bargain, if the planets align.

I sold my old FCR 3 on, I think, Trade it or Gumtree. I was sad to see it go but pleased with the Defy.

Recently managed to sell my wife's old MTB on a local Facebook selling page. Gave my son's old MTB to a deserving cub of my acquaintance.

I think if the bike is a well known brand & model it sells relatively well on free ad pages.

The poor old QNT, while still road worthy, is looking rather tired and could do with a respray and rebuild,
I've always wondered, but never asked: is QNT pronounced as if there's a u after the Q?

We have 7 bikes between us and they are all used on a regular basis.

When we decide to get rid of one we find someone who needs one and who hasnt got one.

Jannie has an old Winter bike she needs to get rid of and we have just had a group of Syrian single guys housed nearby. I will find one of them to give it to.

Hopefully, he will get out and see thr real Denmark. I cannot think of anything worse than sitting in a prefab in a foreign country for months and years at a time.

Faith in humanity restored.

You cant sell motorbikes......
A few years ago, I had a lovely Ducati, but a change of job meant the last 200 yards of the commute were across a building site, so I looked for a cheap trail bike to save the Duc from dirt and mud. The Duc got sold on, as did several bikes (all newer, faster, smarter and more desirable than the trailie) but the XT stayed on the driveway and outlasted them all. Getting rid of it would have been like abandoning a puppy. When I got back into cycling last year, I sold it to a 'good home' (a specialist who builds and prepares rally and overland bikes), but it was a wrench.

I got the electric bike and then a Galaxy tourer, and it would have made sense to sell the old Raleigh Amazon to create some shed space, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. So I treated it to a full refurb instead. I can see myself accumulating bikes rather than trading them on - the new shed I built this summer is already getting crowded. Glad to see that others feel the same. Thanks for the interesting responses.

I've been slowly clearing out bikes and bits for the last couple of years, but it will probably take me another couple of years to complete the process.

Bikes get sold via eBay, because it works! Sometimes they go for what I consider to be a reasonable price, sometimes they don't, but I adopt the attitude that cash in my pocket is better than a bike in the garage that will never be used.

Bits get listed on eBay at a starting price of a fiver plus postage. If they don't sell they get given to the local not for profit bike workshop / sales place.

I very rarely buy anything that isn't discounted, which does help to minimise the loss when selling things on - occasionally I even make a small profit.

I've not sold any of my bikes and I have four currently. I'm very anal about my purchases and seldom make impulse buys. So the bikes I have, went through a drawnout screening process and several sleeps before I committed to the sale.

Over recent years since I got back into cycling...

One old BSO ridden to the dump & left
One dismantled and taken to the dump after being accident damaged
One given to my sister (and still in regular use)
Four sold on Ebay
Seven in current regular use plus one to be finished off this weekend (which may result in another Ebay listing)
