Will my iPod charge off a USB port even without iTunes installed?

I am sure I should know this, but how do you tell a USB 2.0 from a bog standard USB port?

visually there is little difference

basically, if you plug a device that needs to draw power from the USB to run, and it works, then its a 2.0

Will it work from the USB port on a Sky HD box does anyone know ?

No it won't Downward.

Thought not the only thing it seems to run is the HDMI switcher we have but only when the sky box is on.
