im looking for a new bike got around £400 (can stretch to £500). i mainly ride off-road in the peak district (16km-trails) as living in Sheffield at the moment what do you all recommend?

Have a look at a Specialized Hardrock - all the range of 'rocks should fit your budget. I've got one of the older incarnations, but it did me well for years. It was all the MTB I ever needed (until I bust my knee ), with a readily upgradeable frame - and from what I understand the current range is better than ever.
There's a Decathlon in Sheffield isn't there? Some of their Rockrider MTBs get very good reviews for the price.

Get yourself down to Decathlon. The Rockriders are excellent bikes.
Also have a look in (takes deep breath) Halfords....... They were doing some nice deals on GT bikes at about the same price (but their offers can vary), and the Boardman range seems to get really good reviews. just dont let the buggers build it for you.
