"Smokin Joe, post: 1653107, member: 168"]How do you work that out?

Cav is known for his forthright opinions and isn't scared of ruffling feathers. Isn't that having a perso...Oh, I see, you mean he isn't one of those celebrety tossers who spout the banal garbage their agent coaches them in.

Quite. Sticking up two fingers when winning a stage in reply to what people were saying about him - that not an example? To name but one.

The English language would benefit from having sarcasm and irony punctuation marks. Mind you, what are people voting for? Sporting achievement, sporting potential or personality - good or bad?

On the achievement front Cavendish is way out ahead.

It begs the question though, what do sports people have to do to get onto the short list:

Have a good year?
Have a outstanding performance in a single event?
Have a good couple of years?
Show constant improvement over several years?
Be a 'personality 'and do the best that you can?

Well I voted for him, infact my whole family did including my 5 year old son. I used to work in a professional sport, I remember a previous SPOTY winner when she was a wee kid. Now in my opinion (and I know it is only an opinion) Cav is a great sports personality, in both what he has achieved and in his personality. He has a passion and an honesty that is rarely found these days, too many sportsmen/women worried about upsetting sponsors, the guy speaks from the heart and always tells it like it is. I think that the top sports people have a bravery about them, they throw themselves into their sport, how many people train till exhaustion/collapse (and I don't mean like me cycling home after a 12 hour shift)? I think Cav has loads of personality, but as I said its only my opinion.

What I like about Cav is he always emphasises that he's part of a team.

A worthy winner, next it's Gold at the Olympics.
