From the end of this week we are getting rid of the second car.

The MOT and VED (not wanting to start that debate) was due at the end of this month and me and Mrs AndyLaw had discussed getting it through it's MOT putting 6 months road fund on it and selling it as it wasn't being used much and sat outside the front of the house most of the time. It had only done about 2000 miles since MOT last year and we felt we could cope with just the one car.

It's only a 1.2 Fiesta on an R plate so wasn't expecting much for it when selling but to cut a long story short it didn't pass MOT and parts to get it through, nothing serious just lots, totalled more than what the car's worth so we are scrapping it.

Phoned a scrapper recommended by the guy who did the MOT, told him what we had and he said £125. I thought that was a bit steep to dispose of a motor and asked him why so much. Felt like a right tit, he's actually giving us £125 for the car, wasn't expecting that! Being picked up at the weekend.

Just in insurance, VED and MOT alone we are saving about £360 a year.

Sometimes things are just set out to make you look silly.

I am going to scrap a car but I'm not sure what I need to do now to mak sure it is properly scrapped as far as the DVLA are concerned. I am breaking it myself and selling off the parts and all I will have left is the bare shell, or maybe only half a shell. I might have to pay for it to be collected as there will be no 'value' in it for parts but if I weigh it in myself I won't have the Certificate of Distruction.

I'm sure there is a way around this.

The company I'm using take ownership of the vehicle, I fill in and send off the relevant part of the V5 to the DVLA and when it's scrapped the company get the Certificate of Destruction.

Not sure when it comes to just a shell, if you can find a local scrapper who does the same it might be an option.

Was pretty much the same for me, local trips and occasionally to work. Failing the MOT just sealed it's fate and the price we're getting for scrapping it isn't that much below what I was expecting if I sold it on.
