Hello all,
I recently took the blackspire bashguard off my bike (running 1 x 8) and the chain is slipping inwards towards the frame.
It is becoming quite irritating and after some research it would seem their are many types of chainrings such as ramped / non- ramped and narrow/wide.
Can anyone tell me which I will need to sort my problem and what the different chainrings do.
Thanks.

Ramps and pins on chainrings help in shifting from one ring to another, which is exactly what you do NOT want to do since you only have one ring!

Narrow/wide rings help keep the chain on, so that sounds like a good bet for you.

Okay, will the narrow/wide chainring help the chain to not slip both towards and away from the frame.
And also,
Would you recommend. Good chainring in the £20 - £40 region.
Thanks again Colin !!

I was looking at a race face chainring. However it says compatible with 9,10 or 11 and mine is 8 ... will this effect how it works.
Thanks.

I think it should work ok. As far as I know, the internal dimensions of 8/9/10/11 speed chains are the same - the parts that the chainring teeth go into. It is the outside dimensions of the chains which are different.

I would wait until someone else confirms that though because I have never tried it!

I run 1x7 on my commuter, use a stronglight track chainring and not once dropped the chain. Except when I kicked it off once and ripped my shoe. Use a 7/8 speed chain with it.

As a matter of interest ... could you take a photo of your chainline for us. Put the chain on the 4th biggest (5th smallest) cog at the back and point the camera from the back of the bike along the chain so we can see how straight it is.

I am wondering if your bottom bracket is the right length. If it is too long then your chain would have quite a bend in it when you go to the biggest cog and that would tend to make the chain more likely to peel off the chainring. It happened on the singlespeed bike that I built recently. (I fixed the problem by moving the cog over because that was easier for me than changing the bottom bracket.)
