He opened a car showroom in Reading, many moons ago, when I was early teens I think.
He was sharp suited and with perfectly coiffured hair - could almost have been the inspiration for Swiss Toni.

Also around that time, Terry Wogan opened a new Londis mini mart down the road. Can remember a bunch of local ladies there, armed with shopping bags, to see him arrive - he was a sort of housewives favourite back then I think.

I misunderstood this and interpreted "opened" as "owned and ran" rather than "cut the tape".

I was imagining Terry Wogan busy with his pricing gun putting labels on the tins of beans in Londis, and all the small businesses in Reading being run by DJs. Jimmy Young and his window cleaning round in Caversham. Dave Lee Travis and his driving school.

Thread drift. Sir Terry Wogan opened the new Rainbow Supermarket in Market Deeping around late ‘90s. My work colleague lived almost opposite the supermarket, there was a knock on her door and Sir Terry asks if he can use her bathroom! The bathroom is now a sacred shrine to Sir Terry.
Pete Murray was a family favourite on our radio.

Is that your DJ name then?

Talking of DJ's, we also had Mike Read and Steve Wright as a double act on the local station, 210FM. This was in the early 80's, they were billed as the Read & Wright Show.

Whispering Bob Harris also had a late slot on the same station as I recall, but way past bedtime for my listening.

Diddy David Hamilton was given the honour of awarding cups and whatnot to the Reading Racers speedway team, which was nice.

As to the more nefarious characters of the ilk, think we managed to avoid them. I have to admit to going to see Gary Glitter at the local Uni back in the late 80's, but his darker side was yet to emerge. In fact, we didn't even know he wore a syrup back then.

I used to love the Janet & John stories on Terry Wogan's show, written by Mick Sterbs, a listeners psuedonym, a parody of the Janet & John books from the school reading lessons, they were about newsreader John Marsh, and his long sufferring wife, Janet, full of innuendo, making out that John was more of a dandy & poppingjay than our man, Accy, always getting into scrapes full of double entendres, Terry would quite frequently read them live on air, without reading them first, with Terry, John Marsh & Allan Deddicote convulsed with laughter half way through.
We used to have a ring round at work, to get back in the van to listen!

Nice that he is still alive and doing something he loves …..

But he was bland as boring as hell fifty years ago and guess he hasn’t got any better since 😀
