It can't really reflect the timing of the birth of Christ though surely... if we are to believe shepherds were tendin their flock and people were travelling to Bethlehem then that is more likely to have been in sept/oct when it was warmer. The sheep weren't kept out in the cold December temps.

Nah. Sheep 2000 years ago are unlikely to have been very different to their wild cousins, native to the area. Unlikely that they couldn't survive the normal range of seasons.

Anyway, if the current forecast is anything to go by, conditions weren't all that chilly.

Err, no. Or at least, it's not something I have ever seen or heard of in Japan. Generally Christmas, particularly Christmas Eve is considered a time for lovers.
