Hi

Can anyone tell me how I can check if my hub/freewheel would be compatible with an SRAM 11sp cassette? I've currently got stock wheels on a Specialised Allez Elite with 2x10sp Shimano Tiagra.

Cheers

You'll need 11 speed wheels, 11 speed shifter set, chain and cassette.

You can however, ride 11spd wheels with 10spd cassette. Otherwise a lot of money for 1 gear.

So potentially the hub I currently have could be 11sp with a 10sp cassette, it's that bit I'm trying to establish. Is there anyway of confirming? The details I can find about the Aleez specs on the web don't give any detail on the hub. I did try looking for markings yesterday but couldn't see anything obvious. I'll try take a closer look tonight.

Handy to know that 11sp hubs are backwards compatible though as that way I can upgrade the wheels first then the drivetrain later.

+1
As TMHNET says you need an 11 speed wheel so you cant use a standard 10 speed wheel, chances are if your wheel came with the bike it will not work but if in doubt take it to a LBS and ask them.

Generally only Mavic hubs are already 11 speed compatible as they use a slightly wider freehub (and hence you use a spacer with a 10 speed cassette). Any shimano 10 speed have to be replaced with new 11 speed wheels.

But if a bought a wheelset from any manufacturer that is 11sp, can that still be used with a 10sp or is it only Mavic who have the spacer option?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, trying to get to grips with this cycling malarkey :-)

What else? I know I might want to change the tyres at the same time but else would I need? I assumed that I could just buy the wheelset (and shim) for now?! :-/

Looking at the SRAM Force 22 so will take a few months to save me'thinks!!!

You'd get far, far better value by getting some fast tyres, maybe a pair of handbuilt qheels and going on a training camp. IMHO fitting over a grand of upgrade to an £800 bike is madness.
