17" laptop rucksack

Can anyone recommend a decent rucksack that can carry a 17" laptop, plus some clothes (jeans/tshirt/trainers) please?
It would need to be waterproof as I live in Wales where the tap has been left on.
I'd also like a chest or waist strap to help keep it all solid.
Other than that, I'm up for anything.

On the plus side, it's quite cheap (I had a North Face one previously which was also good, but they seem to be extortionately priced now)

Do you really want the risk of having something that hard and heavy on your back and near your neck on a bike in case of a fall?

Get panniers.

Otherwise look at the Deuter range, they have the straps you want and a built in rain cover on some models

If it's for on the bike, as @vickster suggests, a pannier is much more comfortable - I also have one of these http://www.rutlandcycling.com/286087/products/dawes-messenger-pannier-laptop-bag.aspx

Although it's a tad long, so it rubs on the cantilever arms sometimes, and has started to wear through where it does. It would make more sense to get one that stowed the laptop vertically I think, if there is such a thing. I'd recommend turning the laptop off rather than suspending it when carrying it - mine was known to wake up on the way home until I started turning it fully off. Bouncing and 'live' harddrives are not a good mix!

depending on how far you commute, I might suggest Booq bags. Theyre naturally waterproof but I don't think I would trust mine on a 15 mile commute through pouring rain.

Cheers folks. I've got panniers on the road bike, I was just thinking it might be nice to take the MTB now and again too and I probably couldn't be bothered swapping the rack over each time.

I use an Osprey 35 litre one daily (can't remember the exact model). Just about takes a large laptop but otherwise a sturdy backpack with lots of pockets and space for a drinks system (but don't use this). Not cheap, but good.
