well done bud, i did my first commute today and the round trip (even taking into account a few wrong turns) was less than a single leg of yours(15 miles)

Still a good effort.. well done..

Good effort- don't fret about not doing return leg, build it up a bit at a time- and by the summer you'll have it cracked.
Don't be in a hurry to do it too often either, couple of days a week until you're a lycra clad super beast.
Pay attention to the weather forecast to consider 18 miles of headwind or torrential rain combo's if the next day is calm/ dry.
Other than that keep going:bravo: (12 miles each way but only doing 2/3 days a week)

First commute today, 18 miles through rural Warwickshire/ Oxfordshire, gotta say it was kinda cool but just couldn't face riding home maybe tmw.

Ps any tips on how to avoid water bottles freezing solid

Dont have much to say other than well done!

PS get a camel bak insulated water bottle, it wont stop the drink freezing but might delay it a little if you use warm water.

I wouldn't put hot water in a water bottle, it'll freeze quicker! It always seems to freeze from the top down, so putting the bottle in the holder upside down should top the spout from freezing, alternatively sticking it one of the back pockets of your jersey would also work. That's a little tricker to do though as you usually need both hands to get it back in the pocket.

This it's called the Mpemba effect - I remember something from my Physics lessons at school; basically something that is hot will cool down more quickly than something that is cooler....

Well played.

as others have said, hot water in the bottle helps.

Out of interest, how will you do the days that you don't cycle?

Have you recently started cycling or have you been leisure cycling but just started commuting ?

Like most have said, 18 miles each way on the commute is a nice distance to do daily, worth getting kitted up for.
