Picked my first bike up since leaving school the best part of twenty years ago on new years day, in an attempt to get fitter

To my surprise I enjoy it more than I thought I would, I started by doing a 10 mile loop once or twice a week and sometimes double that at the weekend, but the bad weather and some family hassle means its been pretty irregular guess I've clocked up 180 miles before this week. My average speeds not brilliant but its creeping up

18 miles seems quite a big leap but well done for giving it a go, it'll get easier or you'll get faster

First commute today, 18 miles through rural Warwickshire/ Oxfordshire, gotta say it was kinda cool but just couldn't face riding home maybe tmw.

Ps any tips on how to avoid water bottles freezing solid

as others have said that is a fair commute. i have days when i bike in to work only 9 miles do a 12hr night shift and dont feel like cycling home but once i get on the bike i forget how tired i am^_^ I find putting boiled water(had time to cool a bit) in my bottles helps keep them from freezing, and with some blackcurrant juice tastes nice.

It was seriously cold this morning. Not all days are like that. You can buy insulated bottles or try making the drink with hot water, it will cool down rather than freezing.
Did you know, hot water freezes quicker than cold water!
No one understands why though.

long way that

when I started, I drove 'halfway' and cycled the rest , ( took a while to find a nice place).. worked to build up my fitness / commuting ability

oh and that mpemba is still 'disputed' because it doesnt always work ;) .
