Dunno 'cos you're in France. Don't overtake on the inside, don't pass the leader and do announce your intentions clearly would be my take on it.

The post suggests to me this is a bunch of friends meeting up to ride together? If I’m right just ride along together, chat and have fun. Try to stay as a group and not string out along the road as it makes overtaking difficult.

If you’re meeting with a club ride where the others may have more experience ask for guidance. Do this and you should be placed in the middle of the group and quietly guided on etiquette.

Above all don’t worry about it. Good cyclists will always help.

Say hello to people at the start and let them know it's your first time. Initially at least, trust no one, don't ride too close behind and always look for yourself at junctions. "But I thought you said it was clear" would be a crap ending to a ride. Try to be clear if it's a no-dropping ride, a no- prisoners one or something in between. If there's a risk you might get dropped, have some idea of howto get home (map, phone, satnav...)

Enjoyed the ride, only 4 of us and a bit rainy and very slow but nice people and look forward to next week, made a nice change to solo riding xx

Some rides are slow for some but the pace is designed to accomodate everyone and make it accessible. I do a mid week ride with CTC, slow place, but nice for chatting and relaxing. I save the faster riding for when out on my own.
