I've been commuting on the bicycle between home (Waltham Abbey) and my current place of work (Finsbury park) for a while, using a route entirely on road, very busy with traffic, but a decent amount of bus lane.

I spotted a dedicated cycle lane running parallel to the A10 and thought I'd give it a go as there is much less interface with traffic. Cycling along it, had to slow right down as there was a car across the cycle path waiting for a gap to get out onto the A10, with another car behind it, and a sufficient gap between the 2.

I unclipped my left foot as I always do just in case, and as I went round the back of the big Audi SUV thing, BOOM. Another cyclist coming from the south was doing what I did, and we just about bumped slightly as we were both going very slowly. The collision bumped me over to the right, oh crap ! No problem, I put my hand out and gently propped myself up against the back of the Audi.

You can see where this is going.

Audi gets his gap, puts his foot down, along with me meeting pavement. It all happened so quickly. No injuries except right hand a little sore, and the bike was fine too. The other guy was apologetic, but as I rode away even I had to laugh at how perfect the timing of those actions had to be. It was -1 when I left home, hadn't seen another cyclist the whole route !

BTW that cycle lane is dog sh**, crap surface, too many roads, drive ways, bus stops etc. across it, it really is bad unless you are happy to move along at no more than 10 mph, I'm back to the old route !

Anyhow, it's my 30th birthday today, went out for a good cycle this afternoon, average speed right up and no crashes, really enjoyed - Win !

@rossw46 I'm glad to hear that your not hurt badly. I cycled down the A10 from Hertford into London once when I was camping in Hertford many many years ago 198? something or other and it was great also. I also used to do a bit on the A406 back then. After a long break from cycling (girlfriend kids and stuff, plus no money) I got back into it around 2005/6 when I thought lets try my old route on the A10/A406

Shock horror traffic mayhem... your lucky to be in one piece. :ninja:

How did you avoid it for so long? I had an off on Black Friday 2015 and another on my third commute this year although both were low speed. The second one my foot slipped on the pavement at a traffic light.

I guess I've been a bit lucky, although have had a few close calls, cars pulling out without checking etc.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.
