While Ive been cycling to Brum now from Dudley increasing my weekly and daily millage, Ive been getting a sore arse even though I had been wearing padded shorts so quick google last night.... Shorts are designed not to be worn with pants, news to me but then I never really looked it up before, so this morning ride in was bliss if not some what liberating so now I have more comfy ride and cooler bits

I made the same mistake on my first cycle from London to the coast last year. I didn't know the meaning of getting your knickers in a twist until that ride. Agony.

Well, maybe I am just a hardass guy because the last pair of padded cycling shorts I bought was at least 15 years ago and when i started to get into cycling again about 18 months ago I dug them out only to find they were well and truly knackered (almost see through and not at all tight lycra'ish!) so I have been commuting for the last 18 months in regular briefs and a mixture of various denim or heavy cotton combat type shorts. This has posed no problem at all but I must admit I never really 'needed' padded shorts in the old days. I simply wore them to fit in with the crowd and their quick drying properties which was invaluable when MTB'ing in mud and rain, not an issue when commuting.

EDIT: forgot to say, my commute is 10 miles each way so only 35-40 minutes in the saddle at a time.

I also wear briefs and generic shorts for the commute. But I find that for any trip over 20 - 30 miles padded and pantless is the only way.

I find the opposite! Going commando was excruciating without me briefs keeping the under cart supported & (ahem) well in place... no I'm not John Holmes btw...:biggrin::biggrin::whistle:

With time and miles your arse hardens, I did my first club rides in the mid 1980's and wasn't aware there were such things as padded shorts, they might not have been about then anyway. I was doing all day touring type rides every other Sunday in ordinary shorts and trousers with cotton boxers underneath. Some of the early rides my arse suffered but after a while I was comfortable. Since then I have never worn padded shorts, I never had any cycling specific clothing, apart from cycle shoes until about three years ago, I now have Altura summer and winter cruiser tights and Corinne Dennis touring shorts. I'm still doing all rides unpadded, normal Sunday ride is between 50 and 70 miles and I recently did an audax event and covered 119miles.

I must admit I didn't know about this until about a year ago. Found things very comfy since especially over longer distances.

Don't do what I did and completely forget to even pack some underwear to change into though. Made for a very self-aware few hours until I could get to the M&S in the town...

Random early post for a newbie I know. Sorry guys and gals.

While out yesterday, 3 cyclists cruising along all wearing white HTC kit, middle cyclist was a woman, whose shorts were slightly on the see through side so her teeny tiny thong was clearly visible.
I winced at the thought of a cheesewire chaffing me bits, #1 son commneted "Nice arse"

Now you know why they are designed to be worn next to the skin. Can't beat personal experience as a teacher

A couple of days ago, I was in the car, and arrived at a country crossroads.
I waited for a big artic lorry to thunder by in front of me, and by the time it had gone, two male cyclists in a white shiny lycra club kit had arrived opposite.
They set off, crossing the junction to go right, in front of me, and it became apparent one of them didn't have pants on under his shorts.

Chipolatas for tea, anyone?
