Dave, all beer is pretty shite in S Europe but we suffer for our addiction nevertheless! The wine is probably better in Portugal though!

Why not take the Bilbao/Santander ferry and cut out the slog through France. That would free up time to explore northern Spain then pick your way down through the Portugese/Spanish border lands to the Algarve/Andalucia for a cheap flight home.
