I don't get it. It took the guy 3 months to cycle 2 miles, and you're bigging him up??

[hasn't read thread properly]

Nice one, Kevin.

If only I could convince one of my colleagues to follow your lead: he drives 2 miles to work instead of walking or cycling 1 mile (he could go through a park if he didn't drive). Then, once or twice a week, he drives 2 miles to the gym in order to go on a treadmill and walk a mile. The gym is approx 600 yards from his house if he walked it.

I pointed out that he could save the gym money, buy a bike, save on fuel and car costs, be healthier and wealthier. Especially as our upcoming office move will increase his drive to 4 miles, or the cycle to 3 miles.

You. Are. Joking.

Aren't you?
Me? Wish I was.

There have been times in the past when the roads around our offices have been gridlocked due to incidents on nearby roads. He's still driven home, then moaned the next morning about how it took "45 minutes to do a mile". Needless to say, not much sympathy ensues ..

I don't remember who it was, but I think it was a US politician who said (I paraphrase) "give a thought to the guy stuck in gridlock for 60mins while he drives to the gym for a 30min run on the treadmill. When he gets to the gym he'll take the escalator up 3 floors and afterwards he'll take it back down agin before returning to his car for another installment of gridlock"

Yeah, I've heard a shorter version of that attributed to a US Senator (can't remember a name, though). Me, I just like being outside!!

He could walk it in 20 minutes. What is wrong with the guy?
Well, most people could walk it in 20 minutes .. it'd be closer to 45 for him. He's <coughs delicately> "rather large". And is not the healthiest person in the world.

I'm sure that there's no relation at all between all of that and his almost total lack of exercise.

What does he do at the gym?
Not totally sure. I've heard it said that he walks on a treadmill due to having knackered knees. I'm not sure why a treadmill would be better than walking on a road; are they cushioned in some way? (Genuine question btw: I have no experience of them). ;)

Anyway, sorry Kevin, I seem to have hijacked your thread. ;)

Treadmills are slightly cushioned but also they are consistent - no potholes, cracks, dips, etc. However, the extra weight would have more impact than 'running' surface.

The usual advice for obese people is to use water as it adds support to the excercise.

If he's that fat rather than risk hurting his knees walking, why doesn't he just roll ;)?

Btw Kevin keep up the good work. Michael Winner and Stephen Fry both say losing weight is all about portion control and a bit of exercise of course. SF has lost nearly 7 stone recently. Yep 7 stone. He first cut out bread then spuds and did a lot of walking as well. Apparently he says he was a ridiculous 22st and a fat b4stard, but is now down to a much more agreeable and heathy 15 stones.

Yes, good work Kevin, and Stephen. Though I have to say, much as I've enjoyed watching Mr Fry on Last Chance to See, he is a bit rubbish at being outdoors isn't he?
