A friend's thinking about one of these and asked me what I thought....basically it's as above but with the gear shifter on the frame down tube, I thought that design was years old but he said the seller said no that there's a lot of modern rd bikes use it

The seller wants 170, probably take 150 maybe less, I can't get the link on as I'm doing this on my phone and he can't get online just now either. I know it's very hard to give advice without seeing something ie in the flesh or a link

But it's really just where the gear shift is as I thought it'd be on the levers

The only modern road ride bikes that still use downtube shifters are BSO's from the likes of Sports Direct.

It's either an older bike, (doesn't mean it's a bad thing), or it's a BSO that's had some Giant stickers put on it.

Either way it's definitely not a 2012 Giant:thumbsdown:

If you can get some pics that would help, otherwise go with your gut.

I can't get the link on as I'm doing this on my phone

Is it on eBay? If so just tell us the sellers name and we can have a look that way.

I had a 2012 Avail (Ladies version of the Defy)....it most definitely had STI shifters - your mates being spun a line. If his budget is that limited, he should save up a bit more for a Triban from Decathlon

My opinion, it ain't a Giant, and certainly not a 2012 one.

Having lusted after Giants since, ooh, 2003 odd, when there were OCRs, SCRs and FCRs in the car park, I haven't seen one with downtube shifters. Or that frame shape either.

Also it is odd there are twin Giant badges on the crossbar, and the front one looks like it's not straight, which it most likely would be if it was genuine.

I would just avoid it altogether, frankly, but if the question of whether it is a 2012 Giant or not is the deal-maker, then suggest your friend asks/expects to know exactly what model it is, you can then cross-check this against known specs/pictures.

But like I say, I'd be prepared to bet a Giant road bike that that one isn't one!

Can't find the bike but I have a Giant Defy 4 or 5 from 2010 whichever was the base model then & that has handlebar Shimano shifter,

So basically it's older than 2012, I kind of thought that but wasn't sure, so the seller's at it....probably only worth about 50 but thought they'd put stickers on it and try an unsuspecting buyer....saved by the expertise on here

Thanks peeps I'll pass it on

Ask them for the serial number and say you want to check with giant and stolen bike databases which you should do for any second hand bike if possible

Didn't think of that cheers....I bet they'll have some excuse, I'll up to him to do all that though, he might not want to as its only £150
