Most importantly, it used to be the home of me.
I've not been there for years.
It’s changed a bit. Most noticeably the big gap in the high street, where Richards used to be. It was burnt to the ground a few months ago.

Oh my gawd. I used to work in Richards on the ironmongery counter. If you bought a screwdriver there in about 1979 and were served by a gangly gormless English teenager - that was me.

I was in there regularly in those days but mainly in the toy department although we used to go to the bit out the back of the ironmonger section to get bits of packaging for pet bedding. My uncle worked in that section in more recent years before it closed.
Do you remember Charlie? He was a curmugeonly old guy who would hand-cut certain types of key, do tool repairs and other odd jobs. The bit out the back of the ironmongers was where he had his workshop. So while you were getting your pet bedding he may have stuck his head out to swear at you.
We younger members of staff were all a bit scared of him. I think the only words he spoke to me was when I took some mortice lock keys to him to be cut and said "they want 3 copies of each" to which he replied "greedy bastards".
He was probably a perfectly nice bloke, but that's my memory.
I’m still not entirely counting my chickens on this, I can imagine there are plenty of obstacles that could still derail it before it happens. But yes, if it does come here for the Grand Depart, wow, that will be amazing. I still can’t quite believe that ‘we’, alright, our neighbours, had the Worlds just a few years ago, and now, hopefully, this. Almost makes living in Edinburgh worthwhile. Almost.
Presumably the Edinburgh start is dependent upon the stages in England and Wales getting the fundings and approvals. I’ve not heard anything about these, are these confirmed or still in the balance ?
