In Winnipeg, Canada, once (work trip) I saw a bunch of fairly obviously drunk American Indian fellas. On my own, and new in town that very day, I was probably visibly bricking myself when the largest most muscular amongst them sprinted across the road towards me.

Then asked me if I knew what the time was

Just to reinforce your comments about preconceived ideas, my son wandered in last night with a a disreputable looking group of lads and I opened the door expecting them to wander past me without saying a word when the first one put out his hand and said " how do you do sir, its very nice to meet you"... I stood there like a loon with my mouth hanging open..

Did you still have your wrist watch on after he'd shaken your hand?

No, bricking yourself is pretty expected in those circumstances (Winnipeg resident 1997-2002). Think how hard you have to be to sleep rough when it hits -40C in the winter.
