3-Speed hubs are as efficient as derailleur gears

I've just found this article. Apparently 3-speed hubs and derailleur gears are both about 93% efficient, 7-speed hubs are about 89% efficient.
Providing that you aren't going in for competitions or doing some long distance touring hub gears are well worth considering.

I have no desire to find out how efficient my NuVinci CVT hub isn't.

If a dealer wants me to ride a 3 speed and 7 speed and write a review on how they compare on hills with a bog standard Giant Scr 2, I will happily do it.
