Ok, so I'm moving house next month. Out of the city and into the country. However, as I can't move my job with me, I still have to get into the city to work. As I'm too tight to pay the extortionate train fares, cycling is the way forward. Just an added bonus that I love cycling then!

So I'll be doing 30 miles a day along a pretty busy road, meaning my bike needs to be durable, tyres need to provide some grip but it also needs the ability to be quick. I don't want to spend the earth on the bike, so am after a mid range cost.

I've looked at the Trek 7.2 Disc for just under £500. Any thoughts? What other bikes would you recommend for the journey? I'm thinking a hybrid would be the best option.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I do a 30 mile round trip commute on road bike or 29er with suspension removed and carbon forks fitted ( more of a flatbar cyclocross bike) and slick tyres

One that fits you and your budget, is comfortable and makes you smile

Personally, when I commute, I use a Whyte Cambridge hybrid with disc brakes, rack/pannier bag and mudguards...on appalling (South) London roads

Define quick, that has a lot to do with the rider, traffic, luck or lack of with traffic lights, in London other cyclists etc

I commute 20 mile round trip mainly on paved cycle paths. I mostly use a Specialised Sirrus Elite with mudguards and rack.
When it is sunny, I am in a good mood and I do not have to carry anything, I use my road bikes.

Cheers guys. Being 6ft5, I'm restricted to bikes of a rather large size! Hybrid with tyres slightly bigger than road/race bike tyres sounds like a good way to go. Advice on brand/model?

Fossyant, being from South Manchester you may know my route - I'm moving out to New Mills and will be commuting down the lovely A6 into Central Manchester. What would you recommend for that?

An armoured vehicle may be worth considering.
