Apologies for the self-regarding nature of this thread, but I've just completed my first 30 miler. It was quite hard going 'cause I'd not prepped well (few beers last night, not much sleep), and I had my first clipped moment, but otherwise I'm rather chuffed.

Planning on doing the 100 mile Northern Rock Cyclone next year, so there's a long way to go both literally and metaphorically.

Good effort , HP, you'll soon be notching your '50' and then '100'. :bravo:

No need to apologise about your post 'boast' - plenty of folk here are champions at that!

Know what you mean about not prepping properly: I start work in a few hours (greenkeeping) and still feel rough after a staff golf day and dinner yesterday, and I'm not looking forward to my 30 min. commute! xx(

I'm sure you'll be fine! Since posting this, I've signed up to a 40 mile charity ride next Saturday, so watch this space for a) Another self-regarding milestone thread, b) Tips on recovering from overdoing it or c) All of the above.

I dont find drinking a problem but the lack of sleep can be.
30 miles is enough to find hard going. How long did it take you?
Well done btw.

Cheers, it took me 1h50m. Average speed of 16.7mph, but that included a stop to reattach my left toe-strap after aforementioned clipped moment!

Well done !

IMHO, if it's a milestone for you, that's the end of it.
Doesn't matter how good everyone is.

I had one last week on a charity ride from the east end of Glasgow through to Loch Lomond and then back again.
28 miles each way, so we did 56 miles all in.

That was definitely a first for me and I will admit to being very chuffed at doing so.

Yeah well done. Most I've done since starting the effort to lsoe weight is 15 miles, but I've signed up for a 36-miler in 3 weeks ! The Robin Hood ride for the BHF.

If my very limited experience of these things is anything to go by, the pace will be modest enough and the breaks sufficient to allow you plenty of time to do it.

Our run last week had plenty of people on it who very obviously had not made themselves terribly familiar with a long bike ride.
They all made it though. It may have been in their own time, but they all made it.
If you're hafl serious at all (which you clearly are) you'll probably be like me and find yourself somewhat uniwttingly at the sharp end of a very modest field. These things may be charity fund raisers, but there's nothing wrong with doing well.

Congratulations. I crawled around 20 miles today. The bloke I was with didn't break a sweat!!!

Cool, I did my first 30 today also (50km), albeit in a slower time than you; 2h10, all I can say is that I'm absolutely knackered, and really looking forward to a large dinner tonight

16.7mph sounds pretty good to me. Certainly faster than me , but then i am on a 26inch mountain bike (have to point that out).

Well done, there are some distances that are mental barriers ( with me it was Bridgend to Cardiff) once they are done they disapear forever as a "problem" and the next distance always seems so much easier to reach. 30 is one of those, the next i would suggest would be 75... go to it.
