I have just received a letter from the college I work for ( part-time) advising me that all part time staff are having their salaries reviewed with a 32% pay cut!! That means I will be earning £12 per hour less as from September 2017. The reason given was to put all part time staff on the same level since the college amalgamated with another one who were paid less than us. Why not do it the other way round and bring the other staff to the same level as us? Because I am at the top of the pay scale, having worked there part time for the last 30 years, I will suffer the most. Of course, the Principal of the college, who is on £120 000 a year , is not affected. So, come September 2017, I intend to put in for retirement and hope they accept it. If they don't, I will just work to rule and no more.

That is not good, I hate to see people have promises taken away from them. Hopefully you are in a good enough financial position to enjoy your retirement, have fun.

I believe they are doing the same thing to teaching assistants in Derby.

Why doesn't that surprise me?

My previous employers went for 20% cut, after 3 years of freezes.
That is previous employer. I left thus getting a 40% cut and working considerably more - sounds stupid but I'm now home every night instead of being away 7 months a year. The 20% cut was enough to convince me the future was limited with them and take a big change in direction.

Not quite the same but similarly outrageous IMO, saw an email today asking regular 9-5 staff to volunteer to cover twelve hour night shifts for four weeks.

Don't worry, they will be remunerated by...not having to do their day jobs as well.

Well... you've been there for 30 years. I think that accounts for something....

I used to work for a company that would give its employees a christmas bonus & around £100 or more each and every year of continued employment. Sadly those kind of practises are long gone. Gone are the days where employees feel that they are valued unless they themselves are the ones earning bucket loads of money.

Not asking employers to throw money away but spreading the wealth a little will make employees so much more happier in these times, especially those within the customer service industry & similar fields that have to put up with a tonne of crap from others on a daily basis.

I am guessing you are on fixed term contracts, a lot depends on this.

A few points. Bringing the lower paid people up to the level of the higher level which is referred to as 'red lining' is very common. As we call know the last decade there have been a lot of pay freezes in the public sector, so that one is more difficult to perform under those circumstances.

One can justify temporarily keeping the rates different. Usually this is 12 months, but technically it could be 18 or 24 months, just is rarer.

Which brings me onto ... equal pay. The amalgamation means that it's virtually impossible to defend an equal pay claim.

Sadly there's a lot of this going on. M&S of all companies are right now trying to remove Sunday Premium completely, standardise bank holiday premium and cuts to antisocial premiums. Not uncommon but if they are doing it it tells you how bad it is.

This stinks. I gripe occasionally about my job then I read stuff like this and I take a reality check. The benefits I receive are without doubt superb. Hope you get it sorted if not then I hope you find something else where you then have pleasure in telling them to stuff it.

I don't know what your part time job involves @gavroche , but it appears you are currently on approximately £35 per hour, and the cut will take you to £23 per hour.

As a part time HGV driver on £8.50 per hour, the same as when I started 10 years ago, I can sympathise. But only a little bit, you'll still be on a good hourly rate.
