Any friendly French farmers nearby, this time of year you could live off salads with bread and cheese.
I wish, i am surrounded by farms but never been offered anything !!!! (apart from the old guy up the road, and it wasn't food he was offering !!!!) (i turned him down)

I don't spend anywhere near 4Euro a day on food and drink in the UK let alone the rest of Europe and I ride about 60 miles a day and work a full day. On tour if you cook for yourself you can eat much better more cheaply.

No chance here in france, things are getting very expensive, coffee large 2.40, pain au chocolate 1.euro leaving 1.40 for the rest of the day !!!!
s7ephanie, think of cheap supermarket food, or Aldi/Lidl fare. It could be done for €4 a day but it would be nought more than subsistence living. Personaly , I wouldn't do it. One of the delights of France is fresh baked baguette and pastries, etc and I couldn't imagine going withOUT that experience.

But if you had a 4 euro budget you wouldn't buy a coffee or beer from a cafe/bar. It wasn't a subsistence living for me, I'd buy a large (very) fresh baguette from the Dia chain, tuna/cheese, a tomato, cherries and a 6 pack of magdalena cakes for less than 4 and that powered me all day. Often I'd get the smoked salmon on special offer, talk about the high life. ^_^ Wish I could find the thread again, it can be done, easily, but with not much fun and no socialising or not the sort of socialising I enjoy anyway..............

MarkF, i don't buy coffee and that from a cafe, i was assuming that if you were touring on a bike you wouldn't have cooking facilities. unless its a special treat !!!

On 4 euros I assumed that the guy would not have any hot (bought) drinks when touring. I like the Spanish supermarket chains, you can buy just as much lovely fruit as you like, 8 strawberries, 1 banana, 5 cherries etc Wish I could do that here.

Don't understand - still a lot of street markets in Britain, still even lots in London, including very central.

Midnight field raids?

In the 1950's my Mum and her brother and sister did a camping cycle tour of northern France, as there were very strict limitations on how much money you take out of the UK at the time they ran out of money by the end of week one. They then survived the following week on field raiding and lived on a diet of sweetcorn and potatoes.

Around here, corn is grown as cattle feed! It's a different variety to that grown for human consumption and is very tough and dry.

You'd find plenty of grapes to raid though, and fruit trees. That'd keep you going ;)
