Marathon is overkill though and tyres with less puncture protection are not necessarily flimsy. It’s just that Marathon is at the extreme end of robust. There are far better riding tyres for gravel type surfaces that offer more than adequate puncture protection and grip.

Whilst marathon cam do easy gravel it’s a million miles away from the best choice.
And what tyres would these be???

Agree with above marathon are commuting tyres, not gravel tyres.
Another route to consider is 2 sets of wheels, one with something good for gravel mud and offroad, and one with 28mm slicks for road only rides. bit more initial expense but less compromised if you are using as a winter road bike.

ive run gravel kings for a season and they’re okay. Light and fast. I’m comparing them to Compass for summer use, which are really light and supple. Puncture resistant tyres are generally heavy. I’d prefer the odd fairy visit and a lighter rolling bike
