So been home 5 days now after my discectomy and decompression surgery to remove a prolapsed disc, alleviate the pain & prevent worsening cauda equina syndrome.

I have a further 5 weeks off work (minimum) and am on less mind bending pain killers than I was a week ago before the operation so mentally I am ok (although I do struggle for long periods of time), Physically I can tinker around, wipe my bum and thats about it.

So far I have;

  • Bought a couple of games for PS3
  • Upgraded the Sky to include movies and sports
  • Bought a few web domains and implemented adsense accounts to get a bit of an extra income
  • Starting writing some work documents
  • Bought a book to read
I feel like I should be doing something constructive with my time but now running out of idea's...

What would you do (or did you do) if your mobility was limited and you had such a long time off work?

Go to the bookshop and buy some classics to read. You'll kick yourself for not having started on the classics earlier in life.

I think you've got most things covered Wigsie. Two work-ish related things (one hopefully bringing some financial reward) stuff to broaden the mind/get the grey matter working, and finally games (and CChat) to keep you entertained.

Hope the time passes quickly for you

Thanks all, some great suggestions, and some shockers!

Airfix - Great idea, there is a Maplin that has opened down the road and they have them in there, will get at the weekend!

Jigsaws - I hate these, they frustrate me beyond belief! even the kids tweenies or scooby doo 25 peicers irritate me

W*nking - this has actually upped in frequency since the Op and the cauda equina syndrome seems to have been treated.

Tripe - I tend to steer clear of food you need to "learn to love"

Guitar - this may be an option, wigsie jnr has one and a teach yourself book

I did actually think about learning a language! Spainish i have picked up bits and bobs since my folks bought a place out there, or arabic, as I used to be able to get by conversationally and always meant to learn more.

I just read, watched all 5 season of The Wire which was very good. Looked at a bit of porn on the net, that's about it really.
