It's a bit more complicated than that...
Fuel taxes raise huge amounts of revenue. If I and many other motorists didn't pay these taxes, all the non-motorists would have to pay an awful lot more tax via some other mechanism. What are these 'other costs' that you allude to?
We've already done this one - in this thread and in many others. The economic cost of motoring is something like three times the amount of tax that motorists pay.

You drive 15,000 miles per year or thereabouts. You generate 15,000 miles per year's worth of CO2, exhaust pollutants, noise pollution and congestion. All of which have a measurable cost to the country - a cost which adds up to rather more than the tax you pay.

Non motorists subsidise motorists.

I think you need stamina for these threads to keep regurgitating stuff.

I do get frustrated when the word "no choice" phrased is used in our society. We are so so fortunate to have the opportunities and choice that we do. I have extended family where "no choice" is an appropriate term in some situations.

Do better. I spent a few days once winding people up on the Safespeed forum, before I realized it was an irredeemably ignoble pursuit and wasn't really helping me think about anything. You've spent years indulging your hostility to cyclists here. So what do you want? It isn't me that's hanging around disparaging a community whilst pretending to be part of it - I don't owe you any explanation whatever. Prove me wrong, and contribute something positive.

The difference between you and me is that you only went there to 'put them to right'. You don't own a car, you've never run one. You admit you were deliberately trolling for no other reason, and regarded each and every one of the people there as knobs so no room for negotiation on moot points on your part was there!

Me on the other hand have been riding cycles for years, have had some nice ones, and some crap ones, and have a genuine interest in cycling, and am working my way around to getting another nice one which I want to get on and ride.

Likewise, I have not been without a motorcycle since I was 17, but some of them (Honda 250RSA) languished for years because they weren't that nice to ride - meaning I was actually off the road for about 5 years when my kids were little

In the last 5 years I've put hard cash down on a Marin Fairfax (£600), and a Giant OCR1 (£750) - not including the other kit like SPDs, shoes, clothes, lights, etc and done a few thousand miles on them..
Why am I barely riding my hardtail MTB for now (which I've owned for 10 years)- because it is hateful in the same way which the Honda was, and I am happy to wait untilI can get another nice roadie.
The Giant got nicked last year, and was a total loss financially for me which means I have to earn the money again to replace it.

If you had dependents of your own, and maintaining other commitments to give them a reasonable quality of life (as I do), you would understand why with the best will in the world, I just can't snap my fingers and make these things happen.

We see things differently because I have an interest in more than one discipline. I am NOT all for the cycles, in the way I am not all for the motorcycles, in the way I'm not all for the Horses or 4x4's

Does that level of diversity make me small minded or open minded as you by comparison only can appear to see the world from a singular viewpoint Claudine.....

Here for rides.
Why would I feel the need to apologise for contributing huge amounts of extra money to the economy, simply for being unlucky enough to have been unable to find a job closer to home. I currently spend ~2.5k per year on fuel for commuting, around 70% of which is duty and VAT. That's amounts to an additional 1.75k a year tax bill for having the audacity to go out and work! When you're willing to pay that tax for me, I'll start apologising to you!
What steps have you taken, through choice of vehicle, exploration of car sharing, use of public transport, to minimise the amount of tax (fuel duty, VED, insurance premium tax, etc..) you pay as a result of operating a car in the way you've chosen?

Utter crap. Sorry Linford but that statement is tosh. I have an active interest, often avidly expressed, in as many, if not more, transport modes/disciplines as you. Yet I don't agree with your position on the poor hard-pressed over-taxed motorist. Now why might that be if the big picture is what it is about. I even asked you what mode would bring me your level of enlightenment but you declined to answer.

Saying someone else's point of view is different because you have a better grasp of the bigger picture and theirs is a narrow view isn't really doing you any favours.

EDIT re thre bikes: HTs become hateful as one gets older. You should consider a full-boinger. Fancy an off-road ride next time I'm passing through your neck of the woods?

Where, Daisybank downhill ?

I much prefer riding roadies if I am honest. The HT is cheap and nasty if totally honest and so not good for any distance at even moderate speeds at all.
