My new laptop (bought a month ago) was specced with XP Pro with a free upgrade to Win7 Ultimate. I'll be upgrading immediately because:

- several friends have found the release candidate rock-solid, as solid as XP, in fact
- I played with it and really like some of the new features
- my laptop supports virtualisation, so I can still run apps in XP mode if I need to

Why Microsoft are releasing windows7 compared to the beta version of Windows 7 is beyond me !

Maybe I'm in need of a de-frag ;)

Does that include free drinks' token/s too.......

no , but it's been pre-set to record Jeremy Kyle ;)

If I was going to buy Windows 7, I would want the Ultimate version as I would always feel I was missing 'features' if I settled for the Home version.

However, at £229, I'm sure I'm not the only person unlikely to buy 7. If they can let students have it for £30 and know that businesses have to pay the full fee to avoid corporate fines, surely they can afford to be more reasonable about the cost for the average joe public?

If it was priced around £100, I bet they would get more customers.

Reading rh100 'history of windows version numbers' couldn't help but think 'there is someone who needs to get out more'.

Then I realised I was actually finding it interesting

Will businesses actually rush out and buy it though? Was watching a news report the other night on how well a business was doing but couldn't help but notice the guy in the background was sat in front of a very DOS looking screen, probably the companys ordering / stock system.

Just to clarify - that was quoted off a web page

Was more than likely a mainframe app', still a fair few in big business' I think. I doubt they will rush out and upgrade, why bother if XP works ok, most will probably wait for any bugs to be ironed out and do testing etc, but vista never really had a big impact. I did read somewhere that they think W7 will become standard by next year, seems a bit quick to me.

Installed the enterprise version at work as soon as it was available to us. Booted into it once so far and spent about ten minutes having a look around. Been too busy at work since ;). Sticking with XP at home as my laptop flies under XP.

The thing with Win 7 is that it is not so much a new OS it is more like Vista SP3. Vista has been around for a couple of years now, and Win 7 is really Vista as it should have been with the bugs to be ironed out. The change of name is more due to the unpopularity of Vista. I suspect that if there isn't a major move to Win 7 within the next year, Microsoft will simple stop all support for XP...
