Historically old style 7 speed freewheels started at 13. 12T is rarer and 8 speed deemed problematic.

That is true. But I happen to have one of these Shimano 11-34T 7 speed freewheel mentioned by Sheldon and which are no longer made (and I am not selling it!). Most higher end cassettes have some of the larger cogs on a spider to save weight (and the fact that it stops people replacing worn ones individually is, I am sure, purely incidental :whistle: ).

With 9 and 10 speed very common I'm eventually expecting a marketing move to hinder 8 speed cassettes.

Choice on 7 speed is already minimal.
