7 speed hub to single speed conversion

I have some old wheels 125mm spacing with a 7 speed freehub body, I'm thinking towards a single speed build, I've seen some conversion kits with spacers, 18 tooth cog and chain tensioners, but I understand these are for 8/9 speed freehub body's which are wider than the 7 speed. Can you get specific ones for 7 speed hubs or do you just buy the 8/9 speed ones and do a bit of grinding and use old spacers from cassettes?

If anyone has any advise or things to think about when building a single speed bike using a older vintage road bike it would be interesting to hear your experiences and thoughts.

I've been looking at the gusset 1-Er single speed conversion kit but have noticed another with more thinner individual spacers which will be easier to arrange to sort out correct chain alignment but are double the price.

Also another thought I had was about the tensioners they use which fit where the rear mech comes from, on older / vintage frames I presume the threads are imperial and therefore not compatible with modern metric threads? Am I right in thinking this?

I've been looking at the same issues and came to the conclusion that I'd buy a kit with as many choices of spacers and replace one with one or two cassette spacers. There is a company offering a kit for the 7,8 and 9 speed hub and it seems to me the only difference is that you can leave one spacer out and that would work on a 7 speed hub, and for that privilege they want twice the price

can't help, all my ss conversions have been cassette hub based.

If it's a screw on then it should just be a case of buying a bmx rear sprocket and screwing it on. The chain line would not be right though so you may need to look at re-dishing the wheel.

I don't think charliethebikemonger has anything to help you convert a 7 speed hub. The conversion kit he sells is the worst option for you, because of the two wide spacers in the kit he sells.

I have not looked at velosolo but they would sell a good quality kit I think.

I'm with Mcshroom - if it's old and 125mm, it's probably a freewheel not a cassette, which means all you need to do is screw the old one off and screw a sprocket on and redish the wheel. I say 'all'...they can be a bugger to shift. I recommend a big adjustable and a hammer.
