Someone has got to know this I'm sure. Just bought a new rear wheel. Fitting the 7-speed cassette from the old wheel onto the new freehub (?) there is about half a centimetre between the smallest ring and the next one up. I assume that the freehub body is therefore one designed for 9-speed cassettes ? I do not want to get a 9-speed cassettte nor put the old freehub onto the new wheel so wondered what to do. Maybe there are special 'washers' or spacers that go on the freehub. Really appreciate any help as I'm stumped.

If it is a cassette you can get a spacer which slides onto the body before you put the cassette on. Pennies for them.

Here's what you need.
Most bike shops will do them - it's a 3mm spacer. Stick it on the freehub, then the cassette, then do up the locknut. Simples!!

Marvellous! Thanks a lot. Knew I'd get an answer on this forum . Had a trawl around Google (as well as the link to wiggle) and there seems to be a few. Any advantage in those that have cutouts round the edges ?

The cut-outs fit over the rivets / bolts that hold the cassette together. I've not seen this spacer without cut-outs, to be honest.
Mind you, I have only bought one.
